Sundons Gift holds off Will Trapper to claim a hat-trick of Australian Trotting Grand Prix wins

Never underestimate a champion. It’s one of the best-worn adages in racing and was rammed home to harness fans tonight when Sundons Gift won another SEW-Eurodrive Australian Trotting Grand Prix.

The Chris Lang-trained champion made it three-straight wins in the $100,000 Group 1 when he led from go to whoa in the 2240-metre race at Melton’s Tabcorp Park.
Despite being the reigning Inter Dominion champion and yet to taste to defeat Australia’s premier trotting event, he went around an $8.70 chance on the TAB.
Lang took a great deal of pride at seeing the Sundon eight-year-old return to the winner’s after resuming from a European campaign with an eighth placing in last weekend’s Cranbourne Trotters Cup.
“Did anyone not see the last two Grands Prix?” the Nagambie trainer-driver said. “This horse has raced against the best in the world in Europe, he’s a super horse and he’s proved it yet again tonight.
“He’s probably only had about 10 to 10-1/2 weeks work and to beat the field the way he did tonight is just testament to that horse. He’s an amazing animal and he’s just been so good to me.”
Sundons Gift had little trouble crossing to the front from barrier three and that was as close as his rivals got.
After covering the first half of the last mile in 60.8 seconds, Lang increased the tempo to 29secs for the third split which all but put paid to his two biggest threats.
Kiwi raider Springbank Richard ($2.40) was beaten at the 250m after racing outside Sundons Gift from the bell, while Skyvalley, the $2.30 favourite and Sundons Gift’s stablemate, was gone not long later after racing three wide for the last lap.
All Sundons Gift had to do in the straight to win was hold off $20 chance Will Trapper, who had enjoyed a dream run on the leader’s back, which he did comfortably.
On the line he had 1.5m to spare over Will Trapper with Save A Sixpence ($23) almost six metres away in third spot. Skyvalley and Springbank Richard finished fourth and fifth respectively.
The final quarter was covered in 28.7secs for a 1:58.7 mile rate, which took half a second off Skyvalley’s track record.
Lang issued a warning to tonight’s beaten brigade ahead of next Friday night’s $50,000 Group 1 Bill Collins Trotters Sprint, saying those who suggested Sundons Gift would be better for tonight run’s were on the money.
“They’re right, he’ll be better again next week,” he said ominously.
