Amy Tubbs celebrates Melpark Major's Victoria Cup win

Melpark Major justified the raps when he scored a staggering win in the $375,000 Group 1 SEW-Eurodrive Victoria Cup at Moonee Valley on Saturday night.

The Alan Tubbs-trained, Amy Tubbs-driven five-year-old has been touted as Australia’s next Grand Circuit star for several months and he showed that those predictions were not misplaced with a track record-breaking win.
He overcame what many thought the unsuitable starting position of barrier one to outstay his rivals with an all-the-way win in the 2575-metre test. He rated an astonishing 1:55.8 mile to slice half-a-second off Safari’s old mark.
His Bacchus Marsh-based driver was thrilled to see him notch a career highlight win for both her and her trainer-father.
“This is just amazing,” said Tubbs, who joined Natalie Rasmussen as the only female drivers to win the Victoria Cup. “I’ll never forget this as long as I’ll live. He’s just a marvellous horse.”
The concerns surrounding the inside barrier for Melpark Major proved unfounded with Tubbs leading effortlessly when speedsters Divisive and I Am Sam opted not to surge out of the gate.
From there Melpark Major immediately became the horse to beat and although he was continually carving out quick sectionals it was evident a long way from home that he was going to be hard to run down.
After a slick 69.4-second lead time- the quickest ever for the 2575m trip at Moonee Valley - the first quarter was covered in 28.7 seconds before a 30.9-second second split.
Despite a 28.1-second third quarter, Melpark Major still pulled out a 28.3-second final quarter to hang on for a meritorious win.
On the line the $2.70 favourite had two metres to spare over Gotta Go Cullen ($12), who travelled on Melpark Major’s back throughout, while Mister Swinger ($39) finished powerfully once he got out after travelling three-back the pegs to run third.
Completing a pegs-dominated finish was $56 shot Decorated Jasper, who got up to run fourth after travelling four-back on the inside for most of the race despite starting outside the front row.
Well-supported New South Wales raider Divisive was never a factor, while Blacks A Fake raced rearward from his wide barrier and despite making a charge rounding the home bend he locked wheels with Robin Hood 150m out and never threatened the placegetters to finish in sixth spot.
Tubbs said Melpark Major gave her some concerns throughout the race, but once he straightened in front she was confident of victory.
“He copped a bit of early pressure and that got him pulling very hard,” she said.
“But when we came around the home bend and everybody was getting a little bit tired but we were still in front I just threw everything at him and he was able to get there. He’s just a legend!”
Tonight's win atoned for the narrow second placing to Divisive in last month's Miracle Mile and took Melpark Major's record to 22 wins from 49 starts and took his earnings to $600,481.
